Convergence Insufficiency Symptoms

Engaging Eyes

Struggling readers often suffer from convergence insufficiency. Convergence insufficiency is the inability to focus both eyes on the same point and track across the page. This is part of the reason why reading is so difficult for these pupils.

Engaging Eyes is a vision training program, which improves convergence by strengthening eye muscles, enabling pupils to focus both eyes on the same letter and track smoothly across the page.

Poor Eye Control

The red line shows where Abby was looking before she played Engaging Eyes.
This shows why she found reading so hard - her eyes were wobbling.

If a pupil can't focus both eyes on the same point, their brain will receive two different images.

For example, their left eye might focus on the first letter in the word and the right eye might wobble onto the last letter in a word. This can make the text look blurry, double or have a halo effect.

If a pupil reverses letters, skips words or lines or reads slowly; if they say the text moves; if they get eye strain or tired from reading; then playing Engaging Eyes should improve their reading and spelling.

Minimises Workload

The program takes 10 minutes, and should be played at least 3 times a week.

It can be played on any PC, laptop or Chromebook.

How it Works

Convergence Insufficiency Game

Target practice is a 3D game that strengthens your eye muscles so you can converge both eyes on a single point. Being able to focus both eyes on the same letter is crucial for fluent reading.

When you wear the 3D glasses, you need to look through both the red and blue lenses equally in order for the targets to appear to come off the screen. For people with poor convergence this is hard, so just playing this 3D game strengthens their eye muscles and improves their reading.
