Literacy Gold and the Science of Reading

Science of Reading

The Science of Reading is a large body of research from cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience and education that examines how children learn to read and which approaches to reading instruction are most effective.

Literacy Gold is an online Tier 2 literacy intervention designed to support students who are struggling with reading and spelling. It aligns with the Science of Reading by combining explicit, systematic instruction with regular practice and evidence-based approaches to developing the skills needed for successful reading.

Explicit, Systematic Phonics

Literacy Gold teaches phonics directly and systematically, progressing step by step from simpler to more complex skills.

Students learn the relationships between phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (letters and letter combinations) and use these relationships to decode unfamiliar words. They are taught to read words through their sound structure rather than relying on pictures, context clues or guessing from the first letter.

Phonemic and Phonological Awareness

Strong phonemic awareness is fundamental to learning to read.

Literacy Gold includes activities that develop students' ability to hear, identify, segment and blend the sounds within spoken words. Students then learn to connect these sounds with their written representations, strengthening the link between spoken and written language.

Building Automatic Word Recognition

Reading becomes fluent when students no longer need to laboriously decode every word.

Literacy Gold provides repeated practice so that phonics patterns and words become increasingly familiar and automatic. Spelling activities reinforce the connections between sounds, letters and written words, while spaced repetition revisits learning at increasing intervals to support long-term retention.

Fluency

Accurate decoding is only the beginning. Students also need to develop the speed and automaticity that allow them to concentrate on meaning.

Literacy Gold provides repeated practice with reading so that decoding becomes more automatic, helping students progress towards accurate, fluent reading.

Vocabulary and Language Comprehension

Successful reading requires both word recognition and language comprehension.

Literacy Gold develops vocabulary, through explicit teaching alongside decoding and fluency. This helps students not only read the words on the page but understand what they are reading.

Short, Focused Practice

Students who find reading difficult can become overwhelmed when too much new information is introduced at once.

Literacy Gold uses a simple, uncluttered environment and short, focused sessions. Skills are introduced in manageable steps and revisited regularly, giving students repeated opportunities to practise and consolidate their learning.

This approach reduces unnecessary cognitive demands while providing the repetition needed to develop mastery, automaticity and confidence.

Supporting Struggling Readers

Literacy Gold is used in more than 1,000 schools to provide additional literacy support for students who are falling behind.

By combining systematic phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension practice, Literacy Gold provides struggling readers with structured, targeted support that aligns with the principles of the Science of Reading.
